Linear and Spiral at Once
2 minutes read.
The curriculum has a shape that is at once linear and spiral, and the doubleness is deliberate. Walked once, the seven initiates are a life-path: Listening opens into Intimacy, Intimacy into Balance, and so on, each threshold crossed in turn, until a whole person stands at Providence who did not stand there a year before. But the seven are not only a path walked once; they are also a lens that returns. In the discipline of Deliberate Perception, each faculty of sense is carried through all seven initiates in succession — listened to, intimated with, balanced, made art of, embodied, worshipped, and at last set in providence — so that a single sense becomes a complete passage through the whole architecture. This is the engine of the fifty-two: the same seven movements, deepening, week upon week, across the turning of a year.
To see the mechanism plainly, take a single sense — touch — and carry it through the seven.
| Initiate | The sense of touch, carried through |
|---|---|
| Listening | How do we listen to the sense of touch? What is our awareness of touch in this moment? |
| Intimacy | In what way does that bring us into greater intimacy with what we are touching? |
| Balance | What comes into balance — or out of it — as a result of that intimacy? |
| Art / Alchemy | Is there a creative way to relate to what touch is giving us? |
| Embodiment | In what way are we now more in the body for having perceived touch this way? |
| Worship | What do we love most in what touch is disclosing? What would make it worth doing again? |
| Providence | Is there a clearer sense of the world, and of our place in it, for having done this? |
What is done here with touch is done, across the year, with each of the senses in turn — sight, sound, scent, taste, and the subtler interior senses by which we perceive thought, feeling, and intuition. Every faculty is taken up, carried through the seven, and returned changed. By the year’s end the practitioner has not learned a set of facts about perception; they have re-perceived their entire instrument, sense by sense, through the whole grammar of the work.
